Crystal Bowls

Crystal bowls are the foundation of this performance.  Made from pure quartz, each bowl is tuned to produce a clear, sustained tone.  Their geometry determines the pitch and resonance, so larger bowls create deeper, more powerful sounds.  In the hands of a performer a bowl is an instrument and a resonator, reactive and ready to sing.

Striker/Mallet & Puja Stick

There are two main tools used to play the crystal bowls:

  • Striker/Mallet – a wooden rod with a rubber head, similar to a xylophone, used to strike the bell.
  • Puja Stick – a wooden rod wrapped in suede, used to induce vibration with friction.

Striking Technique

To strike a bowl, gently tap the outside of the bowl with the mallet.  How the striker releases contact with the bowl is just as important as how it initiates.  Think of moving fast enough to “pull” the sound with the mallet head.

Different parts of the bowl produce different tones and overtones.  Let the sound rise and fall naturally, there is no need to rush.

Friction Technique

For continuous sound, use the Puja Stick.  Holding the end of the stick firmly, move it slowly around the rim of the bowl.  The scratchy, friction noise develops into a clear note with even, steady pressure, and a smooth, consistent motion.  Timing is more important than force.

Relax, Imagine, Breathe, Resound.
